Game Recap: Blazes Fall to Stags, Close Season

Cheverus 1, Westbrook 0
Saturday, October 26
Memorial Stadium, Portland

Andrei Vile scored in the 43rd minute on a MacKenzie Hoglund corner kick, and #7 Cheverus (10-4-1) held off #10 Westbrook (5-8-1) in a Western Maine Class A Preliminary Round playoff game.

Westbrook goalkeeper Austin Blake ('14) had ten saves in the loss. Westbrook closed the season with its best record in three years, and this was the program's first playoff appearance since 2009.

Game Preview: Westbrook vs. Cheverus (Western Maine Class A Preliminary Round Playoff)

#10 Westbrook Blue Blazes vs. #7 Cheverus Stags
Saturday, October 26, 2013
Memorial Stadium, Portland
12:45p

#10 Westbrook (5-7-2) plays #7 Cheverus (9-4-1) today at 12:45p in a Western Maine Class A Preliminary Round playoff game. The game will be played at Deering High School's Memorial Stadium.

Westbrook and Cheverus have played once already this season, with Westbrook beating Cheverus 2-1 in overtime on Thursday, October 17 to break a seven-game winless streak (0-5-2) that had stretched back to a 3-2 win over Massabesic on Saturday, September 21. Cheverus has lost its last two games, with the loss to Westbrook and a 1-0 loss to Gorham on Tuesday, October 22.

Overall, the programs' historical matchups favor Cheverus. Since 1988, the Stags have compiled an 11-19-3 record and a 67-53 goal differential against the Blue Blazes. The two programs have met in the playoffs three times over that span, and Westbrook has a 2-1 (7-4) advantage in those games in 2006 (4-0), 2004 (1-3), and 1989 (2-1).

In more recent playoff history, Cheverus was eliminated from the 2012 Western Maine Class A playoffs by Deering in penalty kicks in the Preliminary Round. And Westbrook will be playing its first playoff game since the program lost to Greely 3-1 in the 2008 Western Class A Semifinals.

Game Recap: Scots Beat Blue Blazes

Bonny Eagle 4, Westbrook 2
Tuesday, October 8
Olmsted Field, Westbrook

James Patchell converted a penalty kick for Bonny Eagle (5-4-1) six minutes into the game against Westbrook (4-5-1) last night, and the Scots never looked back en route to a 4-2 win over the Blue Blazes at Westbrook.

Josh Crowell punched in a goal amid a scramble off a corner kick about 22 minutes into the first half to build the Scots' halftime lead to 2-0, and Ryan Kern and James Patchell opened the first ten minutes of the second half with goals scored about 30 seconds apart. The Blue Blazes didn't give up, though, with Elisha Gato ('15) and Varney Kai ('16) each scoring their third goals of the season about two minutes apart in the 63rd and 65th minutes. Westbrook continued its pressure for the remainder of the game, but ultimately failed to score those third and fourth goals, despite numerous quality chances within the final fifteen minutes.

Zach Moody had six saves for the Scots, and Austin Blake ('14) had four saves for the Blue Blazes. Westbrook plays #1 Scarborough (8-1) Saturday afternoon.

Game Recap: Westbrook Edges Massabesic

Westbrook 3, Massabesic 2
Saturday, September 21
Olmsted Field, Westbrook

Owen Gillis ('14) converted a Chadd Pelletier ('15) cross into the game-winning goal with six minutes remaining to help Westbrook (4-2) beat Massabesic (1-4) yesterday morning, 3-2.

The Blue Blazes, who were playing their fourth game in six days, conceded a goal in the first ten minutes, when Dylan Blackington headed in a corner kick served by Surafel Zunser. Westbrook's Elisha Gato ('15) answered with a breakaway goal off a Jacob Webster ('14) throw-in about fifteen minutes later, and the half ended with the two teams deadlocked at one goal apiece.

Gillis scored his first goal of the game in the first minute of the second half, and the Blazes held onto a 2-1 lead for about thirty minutes before Zunser scored an unassisted goal in the 70th minute. Four minutes later, left back Pelletier received an overlapping pass from left midfielder Varney Kai ('16) and found Gillis at the back post for the game-winning header.

Austin Blake ('14) had five saves in his fourth win of the season, and Andrew Wicklund stopped seven shots for Massabesic.

With the win, Westbrook improved its twenty-five year record against Massabesic to 24-2-1 (110-20 goal differential) and snapped a two-year losing streak to the Waldoboro-based school.

Westbrook travels to Marshwood (0-6) on Tuesday.

Game Recap: Red Riots Jump on Blazes, Hold On for Win

South Portland 3, Westbrook 1
Tuesday, September 17
George E. Martin Memorial Field, South Portland

The South Portland Red Riots (2-2) jumped out to a quick lead against the Westbrook Blue Blazes (3-1) in a SMAA contest Tuesday night and held on for a 3-1 win to end Westbrook's three-game winning streak.

Robert Graff opened the scoring for the Red Riots just ten minutes into the game, and South Portland added two more quick goals (Ahmed Souja in the 18th minute and Danny Fox in the 21st minute) before the Blue Blazes could recover.

"We had a tough, challenging game [last night] against Windham, so we were wary of a flat start to this one," Westbrook coach John C.L. Morgan said. "We barely survived the last twenty minutes of the first half, but I was encouraged by how well we responded in the second half. We controlled the ball 60% of the time, created quality scoring chances, and outscored them 1-0 in the last forty minutes. Unfortunately, we couldn't ultimately recover from [South Portland's] quick start."

Westbrook midfielder Luther Williams ('15) scored his third goal of the season in the 62nd minute on a Chadd Pelletier ('15) throw-in. Goalkeeper Austin Blake ('14) made six saves in the loss.

The Blue Blazes next play Gorham (3-1), who is coming off a 1-0 loss to Deering Tuesday night. South Portland travels to Noble (3-0) on Saturday.

Game Recap: Westbrook Pulls Away from Biddeford

Westbrook 5, Biddeford 2
Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Olmsted Field, Westbrook

Westbrook (2-0) defeated Biddeford (0-2) in its home opener yesterday at Olmsted Field, 5-2.

Varney Kai ('16) opened up the scoring for the Blue Blazes just one minute into the game, when he slotted home a flicked header from Kaleb Kent ('14). A short time later Kent added the Blue Blazes' second goal when he buried a through ball provided by central defender Mohammed Al Kinani ('15). Biddeford answered with a stunning 30-yard strike from Matt Nunez ('14) that found the upper 90.

The game was played at 2-1 about 20 minutes into the second half until Westbrook's Owen Gillis ('14) drilled a short-distance shot from an acute angle into the roof of the goal. After Biddeford's Garret Dube ('14) pushed a shot past Westbrook goalkeeper Austin Blake ('14) with about ten minutes remaining, Westbrook added insurance goals from Luther Williams ('15) on an assist from Gillis with about seven minutes remaining and on a penalty kick taken by Gillis with about three minutes left.

Westbrook goalkeeper Austin Blake made nine saves in the win, and Biddeford's Joshua McCauley made 15 saves.

With the win, Westbrook improves its 25-year record against Biddeford to 23-1 and it widened its goal differential in those twenty-four games to 128-25. Westbrook will travel to Windham on Thursday, September 12, and Biddeford hosts Scarborough on Thursday, September 12.

Game Recap: Blue Blazes Win Season Opener, End Program's 20-Game Winless Streak

Westbrook 2, Thornton Academy 0
Friday, September 6, 2013
Dr. Paul S. Hill Stadium, Saco

Westbrook (1-0) defeated Thornton Academy (0-1) in Saco on the opening night of soccer in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association.

Varney Kai ('16) scored Westbrook's game-winning goal in the 69th minute, when he back-heeled a loose ball into the net amid a goal mouth scramble sparked by a Noah Oliver ('16) corner kick. Four minutes later, Kai was instrumental in setting up the Blue Blazes' second goal when he was taken down in the penalty area by a Thornton Academy defender. Luther Williams ('15) converted the subsequent penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

Goalkeeper Austin Blake ('14) made five saves and was aided by stingy team defense in the shutout. Dating back to its first pre-season game against Westbrook High alumni (1-0 loss) on August 24, the Blue Blazes have now allowed only two goals in 470 minutes of play this season, a stretch that includes a 1-0 win over Deering (August 27), a 1-0 win over Windham (50-minute game on 8/31), a 4-0 win over Sacopee Valley (50-minute game on 8/31), a 2-1 win over St. Dominic Academy (50-minute game on 8/31), and a 2-0 win over Morse (September 5).

The Blue Blazes' win was the program's first Varsity regular season win in 20 games, a 708-day winless drought that dated back to a 4-1 win over Bonny Eagle on September 27, 2011. And it was also the program's first regular season road win in 1,068 days, when the program scored a 3-1 win in Sanford on October 2, 2010.

With the win, Westbrook improves its 25-year record against Thornton Academy to 25-3-2 and it widened its goal differential in those thirty games to 95-28. Westbrook will host Biddeford on Tuesday, September 10, and Thornton Academy hosts South Portland on Tuesday, September 10.
