Friday, September 6, 2013
Dr. Paul S. Hill Stadium, Saco
Westbrook (1-0) defeated Thornton Academy (0-1) in Saco on the opening night of soccer in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association.
Varney Kai ('16) scored Westbrook's game-winning goal in the 69th minute, when he back-heeled a loose ball into the net amid a goal mouth scramble sparked by a Noah Oliver ('16) corner kick. Four minutes later, Kai was instrumental in setting up the Blue Blazes' second goal when he was taken down in the penalty area by a Thornton Academy defender. Luther Williams ('15) converted the subsequent penalty kick in the 73rd minute.
Goalkeeper Austin Blake ('14) made five saves and was aided by stingy team defense in the shutout. Dating back to its first pre-season game against Westbrook High alumni (1-0 loss) on August 24, the Blue Blazes have now allowed only two goals in 470 minutes of play this season, a stretch that includes a 1-0 win over Deering (August 27), a 1-0 win over Windham (50-minute game on 8/31), a 4-0 win over Sacopee Valley (50-minute game on 8/31), a 2-1 win over St. Dominic Academy (50-minute game on 8/31), and a 2-0 win over Morse (September 5).
The Blue Blazes' win was the program's first Varsity regular season win in 20 games, a 708-day winless drought that dated back to a 4-1 win over Bonny Eagle on September 27, 2011. And it was also the program's first regular season road win in 1,068 days, when the program scored a 3-1 win in Sanford on October 2, 2010.
With the win, Westbrook improves its 25-year record against Thornton Academy to 25-3-2 and it widened its goal differential in those thirty games to 95-28. Westbrook will host Biddeford on Tuesday, September 10, and Thornton Academy hosts South Portland on Tuesday, September 10.
